Organic adoption trends

The Australian market is set to follow overseas trend – with organic produce becoming an every day alternative to processed foods.

Below are some worldwide statistics showing the growth of the industry.

  • Sales of US organic food and non-food items grew by approx 20% in 2003 to reach $10.8 billion. Organic food sales now represent approx 2% of organic food sales in the US.
Organic Trade Assoc 2004 Manufacturer Survey – conducted by Nutrition Business Journal, San Diego.
  • Over 40% of all organic users are between 36 – 55 years old. Organic users are 25% more likely to have a bachelors degree or post-graduate degree.

Group research: Structure and responsibilities for the week beginning 10.03.08

Research results to be presented at our Tuesday meeting 18.03.08

Please feel free to make additions to this document. Please make sure that these are in another colour and that you put you name to the colour or comment to avoid confusion.

- Mick and Parnell to contact companies for company information, e.g. size, turnover, no. of employees, growth prospects.

- Diana, Calvin and Maria to conduct research into relevant statistics.

- Diana: Perhaps you could look into organic product adoption in the European Union, especially focussing on the UK, which is most similar in disposition and culture to Australia.

- Calvin and Maria: Perhaps you could research organic product adoption in the USA.

- A starting point for adoption research would be http://www.ota.com/organic/mt/business.html, which might give you some ideas about further sites to visit.

- All of us: Research Australian organic uptake trends. Try to find statistics where possible.

- We should all be mining the ABS and the Productivity Commission for as much relevant data as we can. The emphasis here is on DATA, not on their conclusions (though we should make a note of these). However if we can collect and collate the data ourselves, we might find we come to some more interesting objective conclusions.

- The link which will take you directly to the postcode search on the ABS site is: http://www.censusdata.abs.gov.au/ABSNavigation/prenav/LocationSearch?ReadForm&prenavtabname=Location%20Search&&&navmapdisplayed=true&javascript=true&textversion=false&collection=Census&period=2006&producttype=QuickStats&method=&productlabel=&breadcrumb=PL&topic=&
